Delusion Series, Part 6 –Breaking Free from Speculation

Hello, dear friends!Welcome to this episode of the podcast, brought to you by the Australia Buddhas’ Practice Incorporated.

Today, we’re diving back into the topic of “delusion,” focusing on “speculation”—that uninvited guest in our minds that traps us in a false reality. I’ll share wisdom on how to break free from speculation, plant seeds of goodness, and create a life of true happiness.

Part 1: What Is Speculation?
Speculation is our habit of trying to figure things out. Curious by nature, we rely on guesses, piecing together past experiences like patches on a quilt. Take a teapot, for example: some see it as beautiful, others as useless; some focus on its material, others on its function. Everyone’s speculation differs because we’re bound by our own experiences. When we speak, we add our own tint—praising someone we like, downplaying someone we don’t. The listener misinterprets what’s important, and the truth gets lost. This is the trap of speculation, keeping us in a world that’s “seemingly true but not.”

Part 2: The Harm of Speculation
Speculation makes us cling to the idea that “I know best,” confident in our judgments, doubting those who disagree, and finding fault with everything. Worse, speculation varies from person to person. The same teapot sparks different thoughts—some see its utility, others its color or texture. Even when we’re clear in our minds, words often fail us. We mean to say one thing but end up saying another, leaving us confused and regretful. This is the harm of speculation—it clouds our minds and blocks us from truth.

Part 3: How to Break Free from Speculation?
So, how do we escape speculation? The answer lies in awareness, joyful appreciation, and wisdom, turning our words and actions into seeds of happiness. Here’s how:

  • Observe Your Thoughts
When you see a teapot or feel a pang of jealousy, don’t rush to label it “good” or “bad.” Pause, observe your thoughts, and remind yourself: “This is speculation, not truth.” This clarity pulls you out of the fog of delusion.
  • Joyful Appreciation
When speculation sparks jealousy, transform it with joyful appreciation. Even if someone seems to have no merits, say, “I wish them well!” The more you appreciate and bless others, the more happiness you cultivate for yourself. This dissolves negativity and plants seeds of goodness.
  • Wisdom for a Better Life
Speculation stems from thinking “I know it all.” But do you really know the teapot’s material or craftsmanship? Let go of judgments. Praise the teapot’s beauty, a colleague’s effort, or a parent’s care. Every bit of goodness you acknowledge makes your future brighter.

Conclusion: Act Now, Transform Your Destiny
Dear friends, transforming your life starts with watching yourself closely! For every thought, word, or action, ask: “Is this good for my future?” If not, correct it immediately—like a mental slap to banish speculation! Treat every person and thing as a chance to plant good seeds.

Appreciate and bless others—the more good you sow, the brighter your future. Guard your words and actions, keep speculation at bay, and your good fortune will blossom bit by bit.

Thank you for listening! See you in the next episode!
