The Avatamsaka Sutra states:
Reflecting on a Kind Mentor is truly rare and precious, for they give rise to all sources of merit, inspire all Bodhisattva practices, awaken pure aspirations of Bodhisattvas, initiate the wheel of all dharanis, ignite the radiance of all meditative absorptions, manifest the wisdom and insight of all Buddhas, universally shower the rain of all Buddha-Dharma, reveal all the aspiration practices of Bodhisattvas, give birth to inconceivable wisdom’s light, and nurture the sprouting roots of all Bodhisattva virtues.
A Kind Mentor universally protects beings from all evil paths, broadly expounds the teachings of equality, clearly points out the smooth and perilous paths, deeply elucidates the profound meanings of the Great Vehicle, encourages the practice of Samantabhadra’s deeds, leads beings to the city of all-knowing wisdom, guides them into the vast ocean of the Dharma realm, enables them to behold the boundless sea of Dharma across the three times, bestows the sacred practice grounds of all sages, and fosters the growth of all pure virtues.
Those who practice the teachings of a Kind Mentor bring joy to all Buddhas and World-Honored Ones; those who follow their words draw near to the realm of all-knowing wisdom; those who harbor no doubts about their teachings constantly encounter virtuous friends; those who vow never to part from a Kind Mentor attain complete fulfillment of all benefits and truths.
Dear friends, in this defiled and turbid world, reflecting on the grace of a Kind Mentor is like gazing at the radiant moon in the night sky, its clear light rare and precious. They are the wellspring of all beings’ merit, the fertile soil of wisdom and compassion, nurturing the blossoms and fruits of virtue. They inspire the pure practices of Bodhisattvas, allowing kind thoughts to bloom like lotuses; they unlock the wisdom wheel of dharanis, enabling the mind to penetrate truth; they kindle the light of meditative absorption, dispelling the darkness of ignorance; they reveal the supreme insight of Buddhas, allowing beings to glimpse the sacred realm of awakening. Like vast clouds, they pour down the nectar of Buddha-Dharma, nourishing parched hearts; they unveil the aspiration practices of Bodhisattvas, guiding beings toward boundless enlightenment; they give rise to inconceivable wisdom’s radiance, illuminating paths shrouded in mist; like gentle spring rain, they nurture the budding roots of Bodhisattva virtues, fostering their flourishing growth.
A Kind Mentor is the savior of all beings, with boundless compassion rescuing them from the abyss of evil paths; with infinite wisdom, they proclaim the teachings of equality, enabling beings to realize the true nature of all phenomena; like a lofty lamp, they clearly show the smooth and treacherous paths, ensuring practitioners no longer stray; with clarity and depth, they expound the profound truths of the Great Vehicle, opening the gates of truth for all beings. They urge beings to practice the vast deeds of Samantabhadra, leading them to the resplendent city of all-knowing wisdom, guiding them to roam the vast ocean of the Dharma realm, and enabling them to witness the boundless sea of Dharma across the three times. They bestow the sacred grounds of the sages and foster the growth of all pure virtues, making the hearts of beings as clear as a flawless mirror.
Those who sincerely follow a Kind Mentor’s teachings bring joy to all Buddhas, for this is the true path to awakening; those who heed their words tread a direct path to the realm of all-knowing wisdom; those who trust their teachings without doubt are constantly blessed with virtuous companions and boundless fortune; those who vow never to stray from a Kind Mentor’s guidance attain complete fulfillment of all truths and benefits, their hearts brimming with peace and contentment.
