The Dharma is the mother of the Buddha. Should one take refuge in the Buddha or the Dharma first? Many people say that there is Buddha or Dharma first? It is not appropriate to make jokes about Buddhism.
Dharma is the real rule, the law of the universe of life, which exists in itself. Buddha, before he became a Buddha, when he was a sentient being, he had to realize this rule before he could become a Buddha, so it is said that there must be Dharma before there is Buddha. Therefore, all Buddhas take refuge in the Dharma. You must absolutely keep this concept firmly in mind, and don’t turn your upside down in the future, because that’s not allowed.
After the Buddha’s accomplishment, the Dharma can only be manifested by the Buddha’s teaching, and only then can we know it. Although it is said that the Buddha must take refuge in the Dharma to become a Buddha, this Dharma must be preached by the Buddha before it can appear here, so we should first take refuge in the Buddha.
In Volume 5 of the Upasaka Precepts, it says, “Although all Buddhas take refuge to the Dharma, the Dharma is taught by the Buddha, so it is manifested. Therefore, we should first take refuge to the Buddha.”
