Hello, everyone. Welcome to this episode of the podcast provided by the Buddhas’ Practice Incorporated of Australia. This segment focuses on the conduct and manifestations of a Bodhisattva.

In the “Universal Gate Chapter,” the text describes how Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intention offers a precious necklace to Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, but Avalokiteśvara refuses to accept it. This refusal serves to demonstrate the strict rules of a Bodhisattva’s conduct:

No Offerings in the Presence of the Buddha: Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara is a Buddha from ancient times who has manifested in the form of a Bodhisattva. As such, he must abide by the Bodhisattva precepts. In the presence of a Buddha, a Bodhisattva does not accept prostrations or offerings. This is a very strict disciplinary requirement.

Acting on the Buddha’s Command: Ultimately, Avalokiteśvara only accepts the offering with the Buddha’s permission. After accepting it, he divides the necklace into two parts, offering one to Śākyamuni Buddha and the other to the Stupa of Many Jewels. This act also serves as a demonstration: even though Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara has perfected immeasurable merits, when manifesting as a Bodhisattva, he still makes offerings to the Buddha.

All of these actions show us how gentle and humble the sages are, completely without arrogance. Their every word and deed is in perfect accordance with their identity, flawless in every way.

Thank you for listening! (End)
