Preface
The previous book deeply discussed the phenomena that occur when supernatural powers are activated and gave examples of meditation as the main method for activating supernatural powers. However, a common question arises for many people: Why is it so difficult to enter a meditative state (static state)?
This is mainly because people are often in a dynamic state, their thoughts are always troubled, and their body reactions are always troubled… These factors will affect our ability to enter into meditation and activate our wisdom.
Let’s observe through the wisdom of wonderful observation. Are we in a dynamic or static state now? In other words, are we in autonomous control, or are we being controlled by an “automated, passive system”?
Our inner state can be described by two systems – the master control system and the automated controlled system.
What is a Master Control System
What is the “master control system”? It is a system actively operated and controlled by users. For example, when you type on a computer, you are operating on the master control system.
What is an Automated Controlled System
What is an “automated, passive system”? This system is automatically executed by the computer and does not require active operation by the user. For example, when you use a computer to play a video, the video playback and control are automatically completed by the computer. This is an “automated, passive system.”
The “automated, passive systems” we use today are capable of generating many self-driven thoughts. This is just like what is described in the Shurangama Sutra. They are like Dado’s madness, which can occur spontaneously without any reason.
For example, when I see the movements and eyes of A, I realize that they are very similar to those of B, whom I have seen before. This resemblance makes me question, and after confirming it, I begin to reason. “B has stolen ten sesame seeds from me, and you have also stolen ten sesame seeds. I am using this fact to prove my reasoning.” Every reasoning is well-founded and irrefutable.
“Those ten sesame seeds are mine. You touched my sesame seeds. Ah, my sesame seeds! Those ten sesame seeds can be turned into a drop of oil. How fragrant that drop of oil is! I am missing a drop of oil. I’m missing it, then How sad must it be? I didn’t get this drop of sesame oil. I want to express my anger. I want to scold him. As if scolding him is not enough, I want to slap him. If so, I need a few fists. If the fist is not enough, then find a kitchen knife. If the kitchen knife is not enough, then use an ax. How powerful the ax is! If I really dare not hit him or kill him, then when I see something of his, I will step on it.” In this way, delusion spreads like wildfire, and it can grow endlessly!
The karma that we generate in our mind, speech and behavior is rooted in a single moment of ignorance, like the madness of the Manvantara. This ignorance leads us into confusion and suffering, and ultimately to the formation of substantial karma.
The retribution of these karmas is continuous. Each action produces a series of retribution.
For example, our suspicion produces a series of retribution. When we are certain about something, it produces another series of retribution. Our misunderstandings and accusations of others will come back to us in the same way in the future. Every act of
cursing, hitting, or even hurting another person produces a series of retribution.
Just because we act out Radha-style madness, we create a series of karmic retributions that we must bear in the future. The point is, even if we hurt someone else in this moment, we don’t feel happy about it. Instead, we will continue to be in pain.
The entire process from beginning to end is filled with pain. Whether it’s the generation of causes or the acceptance of karmic retribution, it’s all suffering. This is like a troublemaker. We constantly dig up a bunch of pains, and not just one, but a series of painful karmic retributions. Isn’t this just asking for trouble?
We specialize in creating pain, whatever pain we can create. Even a drop of oil or ten grains of sesame seeds will start messing up. Eventually we realize that the ten sesame seeds are still there and have not been stolen by anyone else. Even though someone else has been hurt, the matter has finally become clear. However, this series of karmic retribution is never-ending, and there is no escape from it.
We live with these automated systems every day. Sometimes, our master control system triggers the automatic system; sometimes, the automatic system triggers our master control system. The master control system and the passive automatic system influence each other. We create karma with great precision and then have to suffer the pain it brings. Just like an automated program in a computer, once started, it runs automatically without even requiring us to do any calculations, and its accuracy is amazing.
What is a Reconstruction System
The problem is that we have an automated system that cannot be turned off. It has never stopped working since the beginning of time. Even if our body “shuts down,” the real Self-nature never
does, and this automated program cannot be shut down. This is the serious problem we are facing.
We should avoid relying on automated systems. Our automated systems are all woven together from past ignorance, bad habits, greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance and suspicion. Automated systems are skills we have developed through continuous learning, practice and training. In fact, they are just random creations. Nowadays, we even often use this set of automated programs to deal with people and things in the present, which is something we need to be wary of.
Now, suppose a sound is made – “DA”. Can we determine what it represents? Even if some relevant information is provided, we cannot determine the meaning of this sound. Because we don’t know which pattern is similar to “DA”, we can’t knit it. So, no matter how we try to weave, what we end up with will be based on our past experiences—the images we have seen, heard, and felt in the past. Without these experiences we would not be able to knit.
Since this automated system cannot be turned off, and we don’t need to turn it off now, because it is actually ourselves, how can we turn ourselves off? In fact, our body is not entirely equivalent to this system, because the real “I” is eternal. From beginningless time to the present, the true self has never died, and this chaotic fabrication has never stopped.
Now, our only option is to create a new set of procedures. However, in the process of re-establishing this system in our master control system, we need to establish it step by step and carefully. In the process of establishment, we need to consolidate it continuously and repeatedly. This is a process that requires patience and persistence.
Existing automated systems are constantly reacting as we build systems from the ground up. we already have the data for it to
react. Everything we have ever seen, heard, and felt is its source of data.
For example, you have always found someone pleasing to your eyes, but one day you suddenly find that his nose grows downward, which makes you feel something is wrong. “There is something wrong with this person! The nose should grow upward, so that you can drink enough water when walking on a rainy day. This is correct. How can it grow downward? Then it cannot catch any rainwater. There is something wrong with this person, the nose What’s the point of looking like this?” From then on, you decide that this person is bad just because his nose is not right. But maybe one day you feel better and suddenly think, “Actually, I look like this too, and it’s pretty good. Forget it, I’ll forgive you.”
What does the master control system rely on? Where did this automated controlled system come from?
If you make the wrong choice and operate according to the wrong system, it is impossible to get correct results and it will definitely be painful. Everything you do with it is wrong, and every result is wrong. Wrong is equal to painful.
The master control system means that you take the initiative to create every detail now.
For example, if you have never eaten durian before, you will taste it for the first time. However, when you taste it, you will combine it with many good and bad feelings, and your mood ups and downs as you piece it together. But what’s left in the end is your understanding of it. Once you taste it a lot, you’ll find that you fall in love with it. You find that you fall in love with it, this is your main control system.
If you build it bit by bit, you are building a completely new system. Without the participation of the automated system at this time, you will form a new system. At this time, it will also enter the automation state. For example, if you have done too many
math problems and suddenly have a dream, you have done math problems all night that day. It seems like a dream, but in fact it is the activation of the automatic system, also called consciousness and habit. Habits are also called automated systems. If it is used for correct and safe operations, it is called an automated correct and safe system. This is different from your previous automated system with painful mistakes. It will naturally create everything that is correct and safe.
For example, everyone in the world wants to get rich, but the system everyone activates is wrong. If you use money to get rich by being greedy and stingy, you will not only not get rich, but you will also lose money. He believes that it must be held in his hand and must not be given to others; if it is given to others, it will be gone for me. This is a wrong system, and the results must be painful. The lowest and most obvious example in the Buddhist scriptures, the monk of two coins, is the worst and correct way to get rich. He only had two coins at that time, and he offered them all. The retribution is interesting. You can only get two coins, but it can be unlimited. Every time he prays, two coins appear. It is impossible to give out three coins or one coin at once. But he will always have these two coins. It’s just that spiritual, it won’t change. There are also people who know how to do it. If they use great compassion to get two coins, it will not be two coins, but two mountains of Sumeru.
To build a new system, build it bit by bit. Don’t mix wrong systems in the process. Be pure, practice slowly, do it every day, come up with a new system, always use the new system, and no longer use the wrong and painful system. An automated system that suffers from errors will run out of power if it is not powered for a long time, and a computer that runs out of power will be useless. If you don’t nourish it, it will wear out and die.
How to make it die faster? Repent, a great confession! First, you need to know clearly what it is! ‘How do I mess with this system?
How could I do this? You absolutely cannot do this. ’ The premise is to understand it. After a series of mistakes, you can only taste a series of bitter fruits. Why harm yourself? The regret at that time is real.
The problem is that many people say that they like what you like, but in their hearts, they don’t like what you like. A lot of people say repentance, but they like it so much that they don’t want to throw it away.
To understand precisely what is meant by the automatic error system of suffering, in fact, the automatic error system is what the Buddhists refer to as worry. If you create according to your agitation, and it is automatic, then it must be painful.
We don’t know what we can rely on to achieve peace and happiness, but the Buddha has already said it. Not only did the Buddha explain the principles and functions, but I also provided examples in the Buddhist scriptures based on the actual situations of many people at that time.
Let’s first explore a question: Can we fully control our inner world? When we try to enter a static state, or try to modify our thinking, do we really have complete control over our hearts and minds? For example, when we want to walk or run, since our legs are our own, we have complete control over them. So, does this control also apply to our inner lives?
After in-depth exploration, we will find that we do not have complete control over our inner world. Even when we don’t need to think or solve problems, our mind is still functioning, it is still thinking about problems.
The point is, if you want to activate these instinctive magical transformation abilities, you must enter deep meditation. You are practicing concentration now because you want to settle down yourself but find that you cannot settle down because you are constantly thinking.
If you already have this understanding, congratulations, you have begun to enter Buddhism.
So, what exactly does “entering Buddhism” mean? We have a subtle awareness of the problem. This question is a fundamental one. All of our lives, work, and studies rely on thinking and imagination, but we find that they are not entirely under our own control. However, everyone thinks that it is “I” who is imagining and “I” who is thinking. This understanding requires further discussion and understanding.
In order to have a deeper understanding and grasp of the activities of our consciousness and changes in thinking, we can use movies and TV dramas as an observation tool.
We must learn to observe, starting from appreciating a film and television drama, and observe the subtle movements of every actor.
For example, he hesitated and thought about it. Do you know what he was thinking about?
Why can’t you think of that? Can’t observe.
Movies and TV dramas are usually performed, and I’ve told you – he thought for a moment, originally, he had one attitude, but then he changed his attitude. Why does he change? What is the point to consider?
For example, each character’s language expression is different. Even though it is the same thing, the words spoken are different and the core ideas conveyed to people are also different. Why did this person say that? Why did that person say that?
What actions, big and small, express their inner thoughts? Why is there such an action shown? What do you want to achieve? etc.
In this way we learn to observe, and on the basis of wonderful observation, if we can remain still, then we will soon be able to enter into meditation, samadhi, supreme yoga. However, if we
remain in motion and cannot stop, then we will never be able to enter into meditation, samadhi, supreme yoga.
