Abstract
This document meticulously details the practice system and progressive stages of the **Great Śūraṅgama Samādhi** (*Śūraṅgama-samādhi*). Its core objective is to guide practitioners in breaking through afflictive hindrances (*Kleśāvaraṇa*) and ultimately exhausting all Five Aggregates (*Pañcaskandha*) to attain Buddhahood (*Buddhaphala*).
The text divides the path of practice into two major Dharma doors (*Dharmaparyāya*):
* **Repentance of Principle** (*Li-chan*): Relying on profound wisdom (*Prajñā*) to illuminate and shatter the illusory phenomena (*Māyā*) generated by one’s own mind.
* **Repentance of Practice** (*Shi-chan*): Relying on the strict upholding of precepts and pure disciplinary codes (*Śīla* and *Vinaya*).
It emphasizes that repentance (*Deśanā*) is the indispensable first step in sweeping away hindrances to spiritual cultivation.
The content strictly corresponds with the cosmology presented in the *Śūraṅgama Sūtra*. It meticulously outlines the states of meditative concentration (*Samādhi* / *Dhyāna*), progressing from the heavens of the Desire Realm (*Kāmadhātu*), through the Four Dhyānas of the Form Realm (*Rūpadhātu*), up to the Four Formless Absorptions of the Formless Realm (*Ārūpyadhātu*). Furthermore, it issues special warnings regarding the interferences of the **Fifty Skandha Demons** (*Pañcāśat-skandha-māra*) that one may encounter during the perilous process of breaking through the Form Aggregate (*Rūpaskandha*) and the Feeling Aggregate (*Vedanāskandha*).
Ultimately, this is a practical guide designed to help practitioners transform the very qualitative nature of their body and mind, molding them into a pure Dharma vessel (*Dharmabhājana*) capable of bearing the merits and virtues (*Puṇya* and *Guṇa*) of the Buddha Dharma. The final pursuit is an awakened state of enlightenment (*Bodhi*) characterized by absolute freedom to depart or remain (mastery over birth and death), completely unbound by “interpenetrating false thoughts” (*the specific delusions associated with the Perception Aggregate / Saṃjñāskandha*).
