[What is called “heart” (or “mind”) ?There are various kinds of heart (or mind).]
[The first is called the Physical Heart (肉团心). It is the one that exists in our present body, born from the blood and breath of our parents.]
[The second is called the Conditioned Mind (缘虑心). It is the one that, in the present circumstances of good and evil, favourable and unfavourable, makes all sorts of distinctions.]
[The third is called Spiritual Heart/Mind (灵知心), namely Spirit. It is that which mingles with myriad differences without being confused, passes through the three periods of time without changing, shines brightly and illuminates independently, stands out alone and is unparalleled. In sages it does not increase, in ordinary beings it does not decrease. It is almighty, which can let you go to heaven or fall into hell.
[All Buddhas awaken to it, so-called “Spirit”; sentient beings are deluded about it, and thus it becomes discriminatory consciousness.]
[Therefore, Buddhas are none other than sentient beings, and sentient beings are none other than Buddhas. Moreover, outside of this Spirit, there are no Buddhas nor sentient beings. It is only the difference between delusion and awakening that makes ordinary beings and sages so different. How could it be known that Spirit, Buddha, and Sentient Beings are ultimately without any difference!]
【所谓心者,心有多种。】
【曰肉团心,乃现在身中,父母血气所生者是。】
【曰缘虑心,即现今善恶顺逆境界上,种种分别者是。】
【曰灵知心,是混千差而不乱,历三际以靡迁,炳然独照,卓尔不群,在圣不增,在凡不减。处生死流,骊珠独耀于沧海;居涅盘岸,桂轮孤朗于中天。】
【诸佛悟之,假名惟心;众生迷之,便成妄识。】
【是以佛即众生,众生即佛,且心外无佛,亦无众生。唯迷悟之有间,故凡圣而迥异。岂知心佛众生,三无差别。】
