(Jealousy)
Jealousy, one of the afflictions, inevitably gives rise to the eight sufferings, yet many remain unaware.
For instance, driven by jealousy, one might resort to harmful actions, feeling a pang of anguish upon witnessing another’s success and resorting to any means to sabotage them. Conversely, they may derive malicious joy from another’s misfortune, wishing for even greater adversity. An awakened and wise individual, however, sincerely rejoices in the successes of others, offering praise and support.
For instance, jealousy can lead to excessive comparison, causing one to lose sight of their own path and become consumed by doubts and anxieties. Fearful of being surpassed, they waste precious time and engage in harmful actions. A wise and enlightened individual, on the other hand, remains focused on their own spiritual growth.
For instance, jealousy can manifest as fault-finding, where one constantly seeks out the flaws of others and denigrates their achievements to satisfy their own ego and maintain a sense of superiority. Such actions perpetuate negativity and foster arrogance. An awakened and wise person would not indulge in the poison of jealousy, harming both themselves and others.
For instance, jealousy can lead to cruelty, where one desires exclusive possession of everything and views anyone who interferes as an enemy. They may resort to any means, no matter how harmful or malicious, to achieve their goals. In contrast, a wise and enlightened person finds joy in giving to others.
For instance, jealousy can cause one to behave in strange and unpredictable ways, often leading to extreme actions with little regard for consequences. They may go to great lengths to conceal their jealous nature. An awakened and wise individual, on the other hand, treats successful individuals with the utmost respect.
For instance, jealousy can also manifest as a need to prove one’s superiority by belittling others. One may seize upon minor details to outdo others, thereby highlighting their own perceived strengths. An awakened and wise individual, however, focuses on developing their own strengths while addressing their weaknesses.
For instance, jealousy often leads to constant complaining and dissatisfaction. Those consumed by jealousy feel that life is unfair, questioning why they cannot attain what they desire. An enlightened individual, on the other hand, is grateful for all experiences, believing them to be part of a greater plan.
If one were not greedy, would jealousy still arise? Is the suffering caused by jealousy inevitable?
