When we find fault in others, we often feel justified in our judgments. However, whether or not someone is wrong is not our primary concern. If our intention is to help them out of compassion, then we may speak to them in any manner. But if our motivation is rooted in anger or resentment, we will create negative karma. Therefore, the nature of our actions is determined by our underlying intentions. If our intentions are compassionate, we can say or do whatever is necessary to help others. However, if our intentions are negative, even kind words can lead to negative consequences. Negative emotions, regardless of whether they are expressed through positive or negative speech, will inevitably lead to suffering.
The root of the problem lies in the mind. When our minds are filled with negativity, our actions will reflect this. I have emphasized the importance of this principle in many of my teachings. The concepts of “acting against one’s better judgment” and “forgetting mindfulness” are fundamental to understanding the nature of karma and the path to liberation. By testing your understanding of these concepts, I hope to deepen your understanding of the Dharma.
These are the most fundamental and essential points. If you cannot grasp these basic principles, what is the point of studying or becoming a teacher? How can you claim to be a renunciate? These are the very foundation of our practice. I have repeatedly emphasized the importance of these concepts, but it seems that you have not taken them seriously.
Even if you achieve some level of realization, you could still fall into error, just like Devadatta. These principles are that crucial. Yet, every time I ask you about them, your responses are vague and dismissive.
Remember this: acting against one’s better judgment and forgetting mindfulness. I will test your understanding at an unexpected time to see if you have truly grasped these concepts. I will go back and review these teachings.
Let’s first understand the root causes of these diseases. By studying numerous research papers and case studies, we can clearly see that these so-called “diseases of affluence” are actually caused by overindulgence. Those who were destined for prosperity have transformed their fortune into illness due to their greed. When greed consumes us, even delusions cease to exist, for all our desires ultimately revolve around this single insatiable desire.
It is imperative to cultivate a strong mind. Do not covet anything. If others offer you something, it is best to decline, for you already possess everything. Once you desire something that belongs to others, evil spirits will grant your wishes, offering you magical treasures or talismans. However, anything that is not rightfully yours should be rejected. If you insist on taking it, be prepared for the consequences, for I will no longer be there to guide you. It is better to avoid such attachments, as they create karmic ties that can ensnare you. Remember, you already possess everything you need, and what you truly have is far superior to anything others can offer. Why would you want something inferior?
