The Delusional Series: Part 6 – Afflictions 8
(lower)
Once one ceases to cling to delusions, they quickly enter a meditative state. Upon entering this state, all wisdom is naturally revealed. For instance, the six sense organs, inherited from one’s parents, can be fully utilized when their faculties are perfected. The development of divine eye is even more profound. By attaining the six supernatural powers, one becomes an Arhat.
However, some Arhats choose not to use their supernatural powers. They intentionally refrain from employing any abilities, whether positive or negative, including natural wisdom. All faculties are present within them, but they simply choose not to utilize them.
While supernatural powers can be learned and cultivated, natural wisdom requires practice to become proficient. Even with innate wisdom, one must practice to become skillful and adept. Just as any skill improves with use, so too do supernatural powers. Arhats, however, choose not to use these abilities.
For example, when Llianhuase rescued a woman from the palace, she had already attained Arhatship but lacked the ability to use supernatural powers. Llianhuase instructed her in their use. Since she possessed the necessary foundation, she was able to quickly master these abilities. It was as simple as teaching someone how to use a phone by showing them which button to press. Thus, the two of them were able to fly out of the palace.
