The Light of Kind Mentor’s Guidance

Recently, I noticed my daughter would immediately pick up her iPad to play games as soon as she finished her schoolwork. Peeking at the apps she used while she slept, I discovered she was engrossed in a game called “Identity V.” Having no prior knowledge of this game, I entered her room last night and engaged her in casual conversation. Gradually, she let down her guard and openly shared her gaming experience. I said, “It sounds quite interesting. Can you teach me how to play?” Thus, I also entered this virtual gaming world. This was my first foray into online gaming, and I felt rather clumsy, unable to match my daughter’s agility. I only managed to grasp the basics. After a few rounds, I told her, “I allow you to enjoy games in moderation. However, as a student, your studies should be your priority. You can play on weekends, alright?” She agreed.

Later, I went to my husband’s room and saw him gambling online with friends. I stood silently and watched a few rounds, observing how people used various props, even knives and guns, depending on their cards. This scene reminded me of my mentor’s teachings: “The mind of mutual calculation is inevitable. Regardless of the cards dealt, everyone aims to win and prevent others from winning. Once this mindset arises, negative karma is created, equivalent to killing, stealing, adultery, and lying. Killing takes lives and inflicts pain; losing money also causes the same suffering. In terms of pain, this is no different from killing. Furthermore, money originally belongs to others. Taking it through gambling is no different from stealing.” I felt deeply ashamed and grateful for my teacher’s compassionate guidance, which allowed me to remain calm, refrain from interfering, and avoid lecturing.

My mentor’s wisdom is like a bright lamp, illuminating my path in times of confusion; his virtue is like a vast river, nourishing my heart. Every time I think of this, gratitude arises spontaneously. I pray for my mentor’s good health and the continuous flow of his teachings, so that his boundless wisdom can guide more lost souls.
