The Importance of the Ten Wholesome Deeds (Sutra Excerpt)
The Ten Wheels Sutra of Earth Store Bodhisattva
Volume 8, Chapter Six: “The Ten Wholesome Paths of Action” (Part 1)
The Buddha said: “Good man, what are the Ten Wheels of a Great Bodhisattva? Good man, these ten wheels are none other than the Ten Wholesome Paths of Action. By accomplishing these ten wheels, one is named a Great Bodhisattva. One becomes liberated from all unwholesome deeds and fully accomplishes all wholesome deeds. Using the light of great skillful means and wisdom, the Great Bodhisattva helps all sentient beings reach spiritual maturity, leading them to attain genuine benefit and peace.”
“Why is this so? Good man, all Buddhas of the past have completely refrained from the Ten Unwholesome Paths of Action. At the same time, they have all praised the fruits and rewards obtained from cultivating the Ten Wholesome Paths of Action. Thus, if one can uphold even one of these Ten Wholesome Paths of Action without any violation throughout one’s lifetime, one will certainly attain all wonderful and excellent rewards.”
“All sentient beings in this world manifest differently because each carries their own karma. And that karma itself arises from nothing but the mind. So mind is the root of everything. Due to ignorance, beings form deluded and wrong views, which give rise to greed and hatred, leading them to create unwholesome karma of body, speech, and mind. Therefore, we must study and thoroughly understand the law of cause and effect—repenting our past wrongdoings to eliminate their negative consequences, and cultivating wholesome deeds.”
