(Doubt)
Doubt, a Torment.Every doubt inevitably gives rise to the eight worldly sufferings, yet we remain oblivious to this fact.
For instance, when one doubts and disbelieves, they may become suspicious and fearful, guarding their own interests. Such actions can sever even the strongest bonds, turning former allies into bitter enemies. A wise and awakened being, however, cultivates trust at all times, regardless of others’ actions. They do not indulge in unfounded speculation.
For instance, doubt can lead to false speech. One may fabricate stories to confirm their suspicions, often resorting to slander. An awakened being, on the other hand, adheres to their principles and does not allow the actions of others to provoke them into wrongdoing.
For instance, doubt fuels excessive thinking. One may dwell on unfounded suspicions, painting increasingly negative and distorted pictures in their mind. This can repel positive influences and attract misfortune. A wise and awakened being, in contrast, thinks and acts according to principle.
For instance, doubt can lead to self-deprecation, arrogance, and hypersensitivity. When plagued by doubt, one may feel inferior, overlooked, and unworthy, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure. The wise, however, cultivate a confident and optimistic outlook.
For instance, doubt can foster arrogance, leading one to underestimate others and overestimate oneself. A truly wise individual recognizes the unique qualities in every person.
For instance, doubt can make one overly sensitive, magnifying minor incidents and harboring suspicions. Such individuals may constantly feel under attack and go to great lengths to project a positive image. In contrast, the wise focus on personal growth and improvement.
For instance, doubt can lead to rejection of others’ good intentions. When someone offers advice, a person plagued by doubt may suspect hidden motives, believing that the other party is either insincere or has ulterior intentions. A wise and awakened individual, however, is open to constructive criticism and willing to improve based on the advice of others.
If one is not greedy, will there still be doubt? Is the suffering arising from every doubt inevitable?
