To earnestly perceive the grace and vows of Medicine Buddha, one must first understand the significance of receiving. When someone offers a gift, a customary response is to accept it. To refuse such an offering would be akin to a Buddha or Bodhisattva perpetually holding out a gift, waiting indefinitely for one to accept. While these enlightened beings are devoid of afflictions and would continue to offer, it is essential to recognize the importance of reciprocation. Even in the most challenging of circumstances, such as a corrupt officialdom, one would not reject a gift. This is because of the inherent value placed on the offering. When presented with a valuable gift, such as a substantial sum of money, acceptance is natural. However, if one were to be offered a gift of immeasurable spiritual value, such as the grace of a Buddha, doubt may arise. It is this doubt that hinders the full reception of such blessings. To truly benefit from the grace of Medicine Buddha, one must cultivate unwavering faith.

Why would you give me such a precious gift? You are a Buddha, and I am a sentient being. It is sentient beings who offer to Buddhas, not the other way around. This is a distorted view, a misconception that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas merely sit on a pedestal awaiting offerings. Little do they realize that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are in fact dedicated servants of all sentient beings. They wholeheartedly and sincerely work tirelessly to protect the interests of all beings. Why would they need your offerings? They have everything. What do they need from you? Why would they want you to bow to them? In fact, they would have less to do if you didn’t. According to worldly logic, no one would want to be bothered. However, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do not think this way. Whether you make offerings or pay respects, they can use these as opportunities to help you. Whether your offerings are sufficient to fulfill your wishes is another matter entirely. They will make the most of every opportunity to benefit you.

Let us first clarify this concept. To truly understand the purpose of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, we must dispel the misconception that they are distant beings seated on a pedestal, awaiting our offerings and worship. Even when we offer or pay our respects, our primary motivation is self-benefit. We establish a karmic connection and cultivate the conditions for spiritual progress. This is for our own benefit, not for theirs. They gain nothing from our offerings or worship. On the contrary, they utilize these opportunities and conditions to assist us. Therefore, it is crucial to have a correct understanding and avoid misconceptions about the Dharma.

Moreover, one must cultivate faith and trust in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. They are dedicated to the salvation of all sentient beings. Their profound vows are all centered around liberating beings from suffering. If one doubts the extent of their blessings or questions the possibility of receiving such great benefits, it is a sign of insufficient faith.
