From Making Vows to Cosmic Vision

A seed sprouting with vitality

I. Dedication of Merit and the Core Vows

1. The True Essence of Dedicating Merit

Dedicating merit means consciously directing the merit accumulated through practice toward a specific vow.

A vow without merit resembles a hollow seed — devoid of vitality, strength, and the power to sprout or bear fruit. A vow infused with merit, by contrast, is a healthy, fully-formed seed possessing the conditions for growth and fulfillment.

2. Two Essential Vows to Cultivate

Completely Clearing Mental and Physical Obstacles

A foundational requirement for spiritual liberation and self-mastery is to thoroughly cleanse oneself of all inner blockages, karma, and negative momentum.

Restoring Inner Purity and Self-Control

The root cause of human anxiety and failure lies in a loss of self-control — the senses endlessly chasing external desires. Take modern short-video consumption as an example: as people swipe mindlessly, their senses chase one impulse after another, trapping them in a restless state they cannot escape. This not only wastes precious time but leaves them unable to focus on learning, working, or fulfilling family responsibilities.

Being locked in this state of helplessness is, at its core, a form of mental and physical affliction. Vowing to restore inner clarity is precisely the remedy to heal this affliction, allowing the mind to settle so one can engage in truly meaningful pursuits.

In summary: vow to become an empowered, self-mastered individual — not a patient who has lost control.

II. The Vast Universe and the Power of Mind-Nature

1. Discovering the Boundless Capacity of the Mind

When inner obstacles are cleared and the mind regains its natural tranquility, an enlightened state of being emerges organically. It is not distant or unreachable; it is inherent within our mind-nature.

Most people never examine their own minds deeply, remaining unaware of their inherent potential. In truth, the capacity of the mind is limitless — as expansive as open space, as vast as the entire cosmos.

Every realm in the universe exists within the mind. Therefore, perceiving all phenomena through the lens of one’s own mind is entirely natural and effortless.

2. The Vast Worldview of Buddhist Cosmology

The cosmological perspective in Buddhism is exceptionally vast. A single “world system” encompasses countless galaxies and stellar systems, far exceeding the boundaries of modern scientific exploration. Ancient texts detailed diverse spatial dimensions and varied forms of life long before modern discoveries.

III. Practical Mindfulness: Transforming Desire into Spiritual Aspiration

1. The True Meaning of Reciting the Buddha’s Name

Mindfulness and recitation of the Buddha’s name are not empty, mechanical repetitions. It means taking the Awakened One as an exemplar, understanding his supreme wisdom and abilities, and committing to follow the path until achieving that same level of awakening.

Every movement of thought creates a cause. The moment a mindful, pure thought arises, a virtuous result is instantly born; with continuous, unbroken mindfulness, that spiritual fruit steadily matures.

2. Transforming Secular Desires into the Quest for Truth

Spiritual practice does not require turning cold or emotionless; rather, it involves redirecting one’s focus and affection. A sincere desire for the True Dharma — a firm resolve to attain it — is what Buddhism calls the aspiration for wholesome dharma, a key driving force in practice.

It means shifting harmful immersion in worldly distractions into a noble pursuit of truth and liberation. With this resolute devotion to the Dharma, the fruits of practice naturally ripen.

3. “Connecting” to the Wisdom of All Buddhas

In daily life, in any given moment, as long as the mindfulness of the Dharma remains unbroken, one stays “connected” to the infinite wisdom of all Buddhas.

Through this persistent connection, the energy of ultimate wisdom manifests in real time within your life, guiding you to comprehend the true nature of reality and granting enduring peace and clarity.
